The (story) follows the protagonist, Jak, as he tries to help his friend Daxter after he transforms into an ottsel (a fictional hybrid of an otter and a weasel). With the help of Samos the Sage, the pair learn that they must save their world from the antagonists Gol and Maia.

His mother refuses to answer his questions and thus the secrets remain hidden, but one faithful night, all is revealed to him. For eighteen years, his mother has been secretly meeting with his mystery father, but forever keeping the two apart for fear of the officials finding out their terrible secret. That secret costs Zeek his freedom. With the help of his newly acquired friends on a mission to rescue a tiny hybrid girl from the Roseland creatures, they figure out why they stole her.
