Milly Boyle is a mage, having inherited a spellbook from her grandmother as well as her name. When her grandmother dies, she tries a resurrection spell, but it was too powerful and backfired on her, leaving her with a scythe-shaped scar on the left side of her neck. She grieves her grandmother's death with the rest of her family, secretly eyeing the spellbook, drawn to it despite what it did to her. 

Across the world, a great power is sensed inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, and Doctor Strange is sent to investigate its source. 

He expected a powerful being, both inside and out.
