He has been mute since he was very little, no one knows why. As you can probably expect, other people his age are rather vocal, especially about him not being so.
Zelda sees through it. She takes a look further to see who is behind all of the silence, but it doesn't work out how she expected it to. She doesn't only find a friend.

Between Timelines: A Legend of Zelda Fanfic
One year ago, Link defeated Ganon, freeing Zelda and saving Hyrule. After not having seen Link in many months, they are finally reunited at Zelda's coronation on her 18th birthday. This story takes places between the end of the botw story line and the beginning of the totk story line, and tells the story of what happened in that time. Link was a bit of a problem child when he first started school, all he ever knew was the kindness from his best and only friend, so when faced with other nastier people their age, he didn't react too well. Skip forward a couple years and he's improved. Expressing his feelings however didn't come so naturally to him, so he decided to just...
