The Xantis Tey consider themselves superior to all races the Intergalactic Empire. They have a proven system that takes Outsiders - those not Xantis Tey - and Absorbs them into their culture, willing or not. Their system even changes the way their subjects think, making all their thoughts and actions completely Xantis Tey. Prince Salettin ba Tir, the son of the Emperor appointed to Nevian II, has decided to make Tadessa his wife, without her parents' approval. Their approval is not his concern. His concern is that his new wife is Krindarwee. For some reason, her Krindarwee heritage does not Absorb into his Xantis Tey culture. This has never happened before. The Emperor takes her response as blatant refusal to learn Xantis Tey ways, and he vows to get rid of her. Tadessa, the Chosen of Khaadi, has her own purpose, which includes ridding her planet of all Xantis Tey. Her new husband laughs at her naiveté. Does she actually believe her small group of primitive Krindarwee can actually defeat the might of the Intergalactic Faj?
