"So," she smirked, "Why did you never return my letters?"
I had never received a letter. But when I tried to tell Grace such, she scoffed loudly. "Ridiculous, I sent and sealed them myself. Are you implying sabotage?" she teased.
"I'm not implying anything," I shrugged.
"Preposterous," she said, "Nonetheless, I have another letter here. My offer remains. Would you like to become a Knight?"
"I'm not sure I understand," I said.
"I can explain. You're one of the strongest Alveocians I've ever seen. I wouldn't be surprised if you could trace your lineage back to royalty," she said, as I held up a hand to stop her.
"I'm an orphan, and let me stop you there," I said, "I'm nobody. Always have been, always will be. Yeah, I built my own place, and I'm more than content to be alone."
I said that, and looked away, offering no more words of sage advice to the young Princess. She sat there, embroiled in thought, and she opened her mouth a few times as though she had something to say, before she shook her head.
"Nobody who is content to be alone would say so," Grace said.
