The practice originated in the Philippines . It is mostly practiced by the panay bukidnon people, who keep women from the public eye beginning in childhood. Furthermore,a secluded or confined young lady will no longer permitted to step down to the land as this will hurt their feet.A binukot can't be seen by any one especially men.Binukot is treated as a princess as they are mostly a daughter of datu or Raja (one of the most powerful people in the Phillipines they treated as a king).
