Before the Fae carved the Veil and before the first Witch drew a circle, there was the Pulse - the heartbeat of the world itself. From that pulse came all magic: light, shadow, life, and death. When death was born, something had to guide it - to keep the dead from clinging to life. That consciousness was The Sleeper. But over time, the Sleeper began to envy life.
