"Aah, shit!" I shouted as my entire soul left my body and smacked the skating rink floor right along with my ass. Graceful? Never heard of her. I've been falling on skates since the third grade, and spoiler alert: nothing's changed - except now there's more of me to hit the ground.
I blinked up at the disco lights of the rink like they might offer answers. Nope. Just humiliation and the dull ache of betrayal... because where was James? Oh, right - probably giggling at some girl's jokes like he's auditioning for The Bachelor: Rink Edition.
Then, like a late-night infomercial, here comes some random dude hovering over me, asking, "Um... beautiful, you alright?" Like yeah, dude, I'm fine. Just conducting a close-up study of the floor's personality.
Meanwhile, James is too busy fake-laughing and flexing his nonexistent skating skills to notice his girlfriend is face-down, emotionally spiraling and rethinking all her life choices - including dating him. But hey, at least my butt broke the fall. Silver linings, right?

"Yes Ally?" she heard him husk in her ear suddenly.
She stiffened before forcing herself to relax and turn to face her best friend.
"I didn't call you over here," she told him calmly.
"I know but you were staring so hard I figured you needed something," he told her with his infuriating smirk.
She smiled sweetly in return, "Now, what could I possibly want from you?"
His eyes roamed over her face for a minute before his arm shot out and wrapped around her waist. She let out a surprised gasp as she suddenly found herself pressed up against him. She shivered involuntarily as she felt his breath fan her face and stiffened again as she realized how close his face was to her own.
