each chapter switches perspective between 2 characters. Lynn and her boyfriend Leo are on a desperate journey to Denver, escaping a life of abuse from her mother and seeking a new beginning. With the help of friends Sam and Lidia, Lynn hopes to find solace and safety. Meanwhile, Moxie wakes up in a hospital, grappling with the loss of his best friend Molly, whose heart now beats in his chest. As Moxie travels to Denver for Mollys funeral, fate brings him and Lynn together on a subway. After Lynn escaped her mother's abuse, she finds herself stuck in another cycle of abuse with her boyfriend, Leo.
