A long, long time ago, monsters roamed the earth.
Each child was assigned their own creature to care for them until they completed adolescence. As years passed, however, the monsters grew hostile and began to perceive their owners as a threat, food, or a tug-of-war toy. Once the sun rose on each child's eighteenth birthday, they were forced to fight for their life and their place in society. If they could defeat their monster, they were welcomed among the adults.
