Seventeen year old Cather Riven lives in a small cottage in the village of CopperHaven. Beyond the village a war continues between humans and demons after a corrupt machinist creates a device that summons demons to do his bidding. None of this has anything to do with Cather and she would like to keep it that way. With enough problems on her hands like dealing with her drunken mother and trying to keep her fathers shop in business the last thing she needs is trouble. But that all changes after general Merrick Coleman and his troops travel through CopperHaven in need of repairs, the only one who can help is skilled Cather. Her skill doesn't go unnoticed and she is dragged into the war efforts and only her ability to understand, build and control the whimsical and mechanical can purge the earth of all that is evil.
