Kate Dusky didn't know why she suddenly developed powers that allowed her to control plant life or link telepathically with animals.
She does, of course, now know that this is because she was born in an alternate universe, along with a handful of other kids, where mythical powers and creatures are the norm. Of course, she also now knows that she was born for the sole purpose of eventually protecting that realm with her new companions from evil forces.
