The year is 2190, every year on April 12th, better known as Standard Day, teens the age of 16 take the Test. The Test determines the rest of your life, who you will be unhappily married to, how many annoying children you will have, what dead-end job you will be stuck in, when you will die, right down to the second. 
When Gray takes The Test she is told to marry Alexander Crossley, there is nothing wrong with Alexander he is smart, sweet and definately attractive, but he is no where near as attractive as his older brother. Brendon is Alexander's older brother, he has rock star looks, he is brave and twice as smart as Alexander. Brendon has been known to cause trouble and it's no surprise that when Gray and Alexander start planning their life together, Gray falls madly in love with Brendon. The only problem is that if anyone finds out about their secret realtionship, they will be executed.  While hiding their secret Gray and Brendon discover a weakspot in the systen. They soon discover that there are ways to beat the Test and change their fate.
