Just like the moon, we all go through phases. Just likes the stars, we all need darkness. But together, the moon and stars, are bright. The moon and me are one in the same. For in the blackness, I shine.

I have a precious love for the stars. Too fondly to ever be fearful of the night. With all the stars in the sky, it would be foolish to think we all shall wish upon one. So I, Rachel Baker, pick out the brightest star. One that seems to twinkle in the navy blue sky and wish. I would tell you what I wish for that night. After all a good wish should never be told.

A dying woman reminisces on her short life and comes to regret not doing the things she likes - always sacrificing her own happiness for her family. On her deathbed, she whispers her wishes to a friend. "If only I could go back in time, I'll make sure to live my life for my sake and not somebody else's." Little did she know that her impossible wish would come true with the help of a mysterious woman. And in her second chance at life, she meets a certain problematic person... "Kaiden Ma" - a young and handsome genius who is also the richest heir in the East - has a little problem. One - he is way too grumpy; and two - he is mysophobic. Due to this, he is forced to look for a suitable "pretend" partner. "Senara Lee. I'd like to offer you a deal." "Hm? A deal? What deal?" "I need a fake girlfriend and you're the only one who's trustworthy enough to assume the position. Be my girlfriend for a year and I'll make one of your books into a movie." "For real?! You bet I'm in! Anything for my babies!" (babies - she's referring to her books, yes, she calls them her babies). And so, their hilarious and catastrophic game begins. Well, at least until the "Guardians of Fate" comes in. What will they do with this romance that wasn't supposed to be? ❖ Interstellar pilot and ex-adventurer Alex Gallegos must keep their team safe on an icy moon as sentient storms threaten to repeat the tragedy that ended their last career. ❖ Everyone in the United Inhabited Solar Systems (for some reason, UIS for short) knows to stay away from Mahaha. The icy moon is notorious for failed probe landings and research missions that end in tragedy: the only people to ever venture to its surface needed rescuing after just two weeks. When a prestigious research group decides they want a turn, they ask Alex Gallegos to lead the team. Perfectly qualified and haunted by their past, Alex accepts, hoping to make up for old mistakes and get just a little further from the earth they've left behind. Two months into the seven-month mission, the team is struggling with discontent, damaged equipment, and blizzards acting less and less like normal weather. As Mahaha moves out of range of help and the storms take on a more malicious character, Alex must face the one foe they could never have prepared for. Mahaha may or may not be alive. ❖❖❖ Complete. Wattys 2021 Shortlister. Standalone sequel (Rocks Can Dance) coming in 2023. Comments and critiques are both welcome and appreciated. "The moon's really beautiful, if you think about it," I blurted. "Yeah?" he asked, mild amusement and curiosity mingling in his voice. "Yeah," I confirmed. "It's just- there's something about the moon that's ethereal. I don't really know how to describe it, but it's a constant in life. You can't always see it, but you have to trust that it's out there somewhere. And when you can see it, it's all bright and shiny and overcomes the darkness." I paused, searching for the right words. "I don't know. I guess it's a reminder that there are good things out there, even if you can't see them... And it's cool to think that someone hundreds of miles away is staring at the exact same moon as you. It makes me feel not so alone in life." Turning my head, I saw him staring at me intently with a thoughtful look on his face. "Too deep for a Friday night?" I laughed nervously, feeling my face grow hot. And this was precisely why I didn't go to parties. He shook his head and seemed to snap out of his daze. "It was deep in a good way." *** SHE was quiet & left out. "Oh my god, this Corvette is so fucking sexy." I ran my hand along the peeling red paint. It wasn't in the best condition, but a Corvette was a Corvette. "Can I drive it?" "There's no engine. We used it for parts," Drake said. My heart sank into my stomach, and I let out a wheeze. "You what?" "We were running low on funds, so we did what we had to do," Josiah said. "It never meant anything to us anyway." What the fuck? "How the hell can you call yourselves a racing team if you're willing to do that to one of the best-looking cars ever made?" I shook my head. "It's disgusting." "What? Racing?" Drake's mouth fell open. "Oh my god, no. We wanted a driver." I looked over at Josiah, then Drake. "I drive cars for a living, therefore I'm a driver. What's the confusion?" "You said you drove for RTR," Josiah said. I nodded. "Yeah, Roger Truscott Racing." "Oh no. Oh my god. Look, in our line of work, that means Real Time Robotics," Drake said. "Robotics? What the fuck is going on?" I asked. "You wouldn't happen to know much about combat robotics, would you?" Drake forced a smile, and it wasn't difficult to see the hope leave his eyes. *** Katie Moore is a controversial figure in the car racing world with several strikes against her. One, she is a female. Two, she is a female with opinions. And three, she is a female with opinions who thoroughly enjoys sharing them with no inhibition. A one-track mind (with a few side streets), all she wants is to win a race to shut everyone up about her mistakes and misfortunes. But when she's down on her luck, a team of nerds finds their way into her life, giving her an offer that she probably should refuse.

His eyes had started to see me differently. That desire I saw on his eyes on the lift scared me a bit though. I never noticed the blackness of his eyes. Black is a rare color. He had the rare colored eye which shone at moments like when we kissed. And it was starting to drown me in them. But when my head processed to what I was getting into, I pushed him away. Black means danger. It signifies negative connotations. Death. Mystery. Darkness is black. I fear the darkness. Daylight brings life. Black is death. But my thoughts changed the next moment. The shine on his eyes forced me not to see this part. After Darkness daylight peeks from my window. After each nightly the hope of best next day. After night you wake up fresh, to carry out a new day.
