"The little things in life happen to be bigger than we ever imagined, Scarlett." Scarlett lives her life with two different pasts. Her past in San Diego and her past in New York. For her, it seems as though a never-ending viscous cycle is beginning. She is forced to return to San Diego the summer of her junior year when her drunken mother sends a plea to see her. Though Scarlett doesn't want to see her mother, she seems to be finding some new friends from old times.

The world continued to spin on its axis, countless sunsets giving way to glowing stars, but for Scarlett Reed, ever since her mother was torn out of her life like a page from a book, the days that followed blinked out of existence. Instead of comforting nights filled with home-cooked pies and joyous dancing, she spends them restrained in her comforter, submerged in darkness, her eyes swollen from the endless stream of tears. Until she is shipped to Seabrook Island, a secluded beachside town she has no interest in making her home and thrust into the whirlpool of Tyler Evans - the boy fate knew she needed. For a single summer, filled with stolen glances in the sea and captured breaths sprawled out on the sand, Scarlett and Tyler gravitate towards each other. For the first time since her world fell apart, she had found a home in someone other than her mother. But she didn't consider that her home could have secrets of his own locked behind closed doors, ones that she'd pry open in the shadows. Ones that would permanently expose the mold growing beneath the wallpaper. While her scars were slowly healing, his were burrowing deeper. When their delicate scars are revealed, will they come together to heal, or will the shrapnel tear them apart?
