The eyewitness account of soldier Tad Bailey of the horrors of Valley Forge. Starvation and illness ravages the thousands of men, and a mid-winter patrol leaves Bailey's troop destroyed after a fatal encounter with an elk. The men struggle to return back to camp, when they are driven straight into British territory and taken as prisoners of war.
