Matt Holt, one of the former Kerberous pilots, resides with the paladins, but sadly, not in peace. The wretched witch, Haggar, cursed the poor bean with the Hanahaki Disease. Matt only wanted to help out the one he loved, Takashi Shirogane, in return for getting him off of Zarkon's ship. As part of that curse, being around or even thinking Shiro, would make Matt cough up orange poppy flowers, which gets worse every time. Matt and the others only have a limited amount of time to figure out how to stop this disease before Matt's poppy flowers kill him.

This in an A.U. where Pidge and Matt were the prince and princess of Olkarion. They were half Olkary-half altean. They were sent to the normal voltron universe and met Allura and Coran. Although the infection can be removed through surgery, the feelings associated with the love also fade away along with the flowers. In the same vein, Lance McClain accidentally develops a crush on his fellow team mate named Keith. This crush leads to a disease, where he experiences a simultaneous mix of love and hatred for the color red. The roses become both a source of pain and solitude for him.
