Arïma VanWysse has recently reached the age of sixteen, the age when each female is separated from their families and sent to one of the female sectors based on their skills.

Arïma is stripped of her identity, and is referred to by a number. She is assigned living quarters in what was once the US states of Utah (sector 4), Colorado (sector 5), and Nevada (sector 6). These three sectors are the worst of all, and only for women.

In this torturous society, all women over age 16 are "put to good use to repopulate the world." Their job descriptions consist of one thing: sex. The best part of the job was working for kind men, which lifted the girls' spirits slightly. However, Arïma in particular works for the worst boss, and Gilead's commander:
