A high school junior boy is suddenly shoved into the world of silence. He had the perfect high school life; a girlfriend, star of the Football team, good grades, and all of it has changed. None the less, he needed a tutor to learn sign language. They found a girl who was willing to help him earn his new way if speech. He is then taken away, with his tutor, to a deaf community where he learns hands on (lol get it?) sign language. He must learn how to speak ASL thoroughly and completely within a year, and take a "test" in front of the whole community and pass, or else he won't be able to go home for another 6 months.
