Iliana Katrakis couldn't care less about the will of the gods, and she's certain they feel the same way about her.

After all, it's rare for the god-touched to live normal lives--and that's all she wants. Having spent the last three years aboard the merchant ship Airlea, Iliana couldn't be happier. Sure, her best friend Kain is the only one who knows she's a girl, but it's a good life. The work is simple, and her shipmates are the closest thing to a family she has.

Fate, however, is not on her side.

A storm tosses the Airlea wildly off course. Within the day, she's stranded, alone and injured, on a foggy island known only as Inna's Cove. She's given a choice: become one of the islands' goddess blessed sirens and rescue her best friend, or take her chance with the monster-infested woods. The choice seems obvious.

That is, until the mercenaries arrive. Their captain wants a siren--and not even the threat of the goddess' wrath will change his mind.

Can they defy fate when their enemy wrote the rules? As a linguistics student and book nerd, Eric didn't think it was his fate to be surrounded by powerful women or to travel a road filled with danger and magic. But when he picks up a dusty vintage book from an antique store, he finds himself surrounded by Light lords, Dark lords, and Sirens-the ancient, winged keepers of a delicate balance between worlds invisible to humans. Telese, the brazen Siren who appears in Eric's dorm room, has tried to distance herself from humans while working to keep the balance between the Light World, which wants humans to progress, and the Dark World, which wants humans eradicated. After millennia of unwilling loyalty to her all-powerful father-whose orders are as calculated and heartless as his punishments for defying them-Telese fears his latest order could mean the end of humans and Sirens both. Telese's yearning for freedom and Eric's passion for knowledge bring them together in a dangerous alliance. They must challenge their old beliefs to bring together the warring Light and Dark Worlds, reveal magic to humans, and rally the Sirens against the father-leader who wrote their rules. Can Eric and Telese save humans and create a united, harmonious system of rule, or will the worlds they must align fall victim to their hubris? *** Hubris is now published through Balance of Seven Publishing. Through thick and thin the Law shall prevail. A new sense of purpose awaits us, children of light, in the land where it all began. The darkness in which we once cowered in fear, now curbed by the might of our endless light. Come, brothers, come, sisters. Let there be peace among the wicked, just as the Law dictates. Peace and certainty is all that you have ever longed for, little angel. A bright, stable future. A roof without holes above thy head. Acknowledgement and recognition of thy existence, feverish dreams of grandeur. Greed born from yearning, treacherous vines of rapacity taint your innocent soul. You seek a future that does not exist. Let thy fingers hold the fragile line between dream and nightmare. Let thy light navigate the path. Shall thee give in and falter, O' land of old, envelop his body in thy unending flame of chaos. Spit out nothing but an empty husk, the remnants of a smile once so bright. Shall thee prevail, O', Great Kazdel, I ask of you, the impossible - take mercy on the innocent. Don't let the radiance dim and don't let the mind turn bleak. Wake, young traveler. Bid thy farewells and burn thy bridges. It's time to say goodbye, curly head. Cross post from AO3. For a shorter and more on-point description, look no further! I had something silly written up before throwing it out in exchange for that wall of text upstairs. It's a little story "about a young, dumb sankta who's been dealt a bad hand at life, looking for his place in all this mess. The pointless search for a better future leads him far, far away from home, to a country forever ravaged by war and misery - Kazdel, the promised land where devils roam free and peace feels out of place." Anyway, it's quite lengthy, but hopefully enjoyable? Slide a comment if you want, I'll give you a tiny kiss on the forehead. Man, do I love comments. (Lastly, to point out, English is not my native language, but I don't think it'll be much of an issue ;3)

31 parts Complete

Maera was a nymph. Or was she? She claimed to be a genuine Nereid from antiquity. Right out of the pages of Greek mythology. Well, that's what she told Doc Roussos who lived alone on the island. Kalamos was remote and sparsely populated. An exquisite pine-covered jewel that rose steep and majestic out of the turquoise and cobalt Mediterranean. Maera would visit Doc on those summer nights uninvited. Arriving unannounced, she would appear at his ruin--a formerly destroyed Venetian castle. It was a place over the years he had more-less inherited, as volunteer custodian of the archaeological structure. But who really was this honey-haired girl who began to invade Doc's chosen isolation? Somewhere in her twenties, beautiful, and with a musical voice and a graceful gait, she seemed real enough to the retired professor. But it was her nightly stories which gave him pause for disbelief. They were tales from a long-ago past. And not just of previous ages, but romances and adventures Dr. Roussos had been long familiar with. Mythological accounts capable of beguiling a charmed listener well into a world time before time . . . But were the stories all she offered him?
