Before my novel was dancing in my head, I wrote a story called Damn Animals about a grieving man trying to manage the animals on his farm. All the recent news about April the Giraffe reminded me of this story, as it briefly features a giraffe escaped from a local zoo. The main character, Frank, and his struggle became the inspiration for Wilfred Cunningham, an important character in my novel Still Mine. If you've read my book, you'll recognize this story! It was first published in FreeFall Magazine. I hope you enjoy it.
