Ghosts, souls lost to remain in-between--never to Ascend. Only demons of corrupted souls, Descend.  Souls are pure, in the beginning. If the person the soul inhabits rots, turns foul,  becomes weak minded, the devil takes hold. Only a Messenger can loose lost souls to Ascend, remove the darkness from the un-pure--purify, damn the demon to Descend, free the soul to its final purpose.
