At Wellington High school suicide rates are common and more than one student has been lost to the act. Sebastian Manning feels for every single one and could never imagine it happening to him. Until it does. When his best friend Kale Wells takes his own life without leaving a reason or even so much as giving a sign. Sebastian spirals into a depression he's not sure how to get out of. He falls into a deeper and deeper and it's hard for him to handle. His older brother, Ben is at a loss for how to help him. Sebastian's mind begins running with ideas of why or how this could have happened to him. When he goes back to Kale's house to try to find a reason or some kind of explaination there in Kale's room, he finds a brown leather notebook titled 'The Suicide Project' Sebastian thinks it contains the left behind reason as to why Kale took his life and he reads it. When he finds Kale's abandoned year long English project from that year discussing suicide itself, he's disappointed to find out once again Kale left no reason behind. As he continues to read through the notebook and read his best friend's own words, he comes up with a suicide project of his own. To teach the students of Wellington the problem with suicide, he arranges to fake his own suicide for his year long English project. As the days pass in the wake of his faked death, Sebastian begins to realize that maybe Kale left behind more of a reason than he originally thought.
