The village of Hwen is on the border of the Lurean Empire, a place ruled by strict military kings that managed to conquer most of the continent, where magic is forbidden, and a land only known as Elsewhere, where monsters beyond your imagination roam, killing every human that dares enter, and constantly attacking Hwen, the lone village that sticks partially into Elsewhere.

In order to survive, they have a man whose very existence breaks the law of the Lurean Empire: a shaman mage. Sinced perfectly with the four elements and boasting the power to heal, the title of shaman mage is passed down from generation to generation, each chosen during their first year and trained to the age of eighteen, where the former mage dies. They serve one purpose: to protect the village from the monsters of Elsewhere.

When the shaman mage of Hwen dies two years early, the village is attacked. The apprentice is killed protecting the village, leaving them with no source of protection. However, instead of fleeing, they do something that has never been done before; they force the twin brother of the apprentice, Jesse, to develop and master magic, turning him into something that definitely isn't human.

After Jesse successfully drives off the monsters, securing Hwen's safety for the next few generations, the villagers' gratefulness soon turns to resent. He is driven out of the village, and left to fend for himself in a land where magic is forbidden.
