"We cannot be sure of having something to live for unless we are willing to die for it."

Cuba. 1955. A time of darkness and strife. The dictator, Batista, is holding onto power with a vice grip. Violence and corruption rule the streets with any opposition subjected to the barrel of a gun.

A young man, Dario Ruiz, is caught amidst these troubled times and sinks to the depths of despair. He seeks refuge among a band of revolutionaries, where his heart is captured by a fiery and passionate fighter, Juanita. A long journey awaits him, with love, triumph, failure, and betrayal all part of the arduous march to freedom.

"The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall."

By 2057, Earth will be a shadow of its former self. Decades of unbridled consumption and climate negligence have left the earth almost desolate. Water, oil, and lush land are relics of the past, valued more than money. All nations have collapsed under the weight of famine, disease, and internal upheaval, leaving only two superpowers: the United States and Russia. They were once reluctant allies but now find themselves embroiled in a deadly, global fight for the planet's few remaining resources. While the population fights to survive in enormous urban wastelands, both regimes use advanced technologies and covert tactics in a desperate push for absolute dominion. During the pandemonium, 17-year-old Caleb Morrow, a scrappy survivor from the ruins of Canada, is conscripted into the US military. Meanwhile, on the other side, Elena Morozova, an 18-year-old Russian conscript hailing from the ruins of Norway, ascends the ranks in the Russian military. As this conflict between the 2 last countries left spirals out of control, the past suddenly begins to rise from the ashes leaving questions to arise in the thoughts of many soldiers on both sides including Caleb and Elena that, if answered, reveals a dark and unsettling truth. Scarcity is a story of curiosity, critical thinking, corruption, and trust in a collapsing world. Make sure to keep your rifle tight as you explore a dark truth... *This story includes mature themes such as: war crimes and heavy violence* *Perspectives will continuously shift between characters in this story* *All pictures are not real sketches*

KIRKUS REVIEW Gritty, evocative historical debut novel. Jorge Torrente deftly intertwines personal drama with national and international political machinations, the colorful Cuban landscape and culture with the brutality and carnage of battle, and the warmth of love set against the drive for revenge. Addictive read. MIDWEST REVIEW An engaging blend of action-packed confrontation and family life probe that brings to life the events of 1960's Cuba. Jorge Torrente takes the time to create realistic, memorable characters, whose backgrounds, perceptions, and ideals drive the plot. This, in turn, makes the story of attacks, rebellion, and special interests and daily affairs come to life without the need for prior introduction. He also excels at depicting the special interests and involvements of those abroad, who hold a particular perspective and interest in Cuba for their own reasons or due to family experiences. BLUEINK Violent, tragic and suspenseful, the brutal journey is handled with a cleverness that makes the result seem uncertain until almost the end. CLARION/FOREWORD Jorge Torrente's The Uprising is an engrossing and humane historical novel about the fight for Cuba's freedom. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx-K1zmaETM
