'It all started with a sword.'

And so beings 'A Brief History of the Swordthane Wars' - an old, worn and well-read book owned by Omerod Thorne, liegeman to Silverbane the night elf, Dark Knight and Paladin.

Not that this mattered to young Tom Clovely for he had never read a book in his life. And reading is perhaps the furthest thing from his mind in his chaotic and illicit daily life as an orphaned urchin of Valdos city. Until one theft too many - from the wrong person at the wrong time and in the wrong place - changes his life utterly.

Thrown into the company of the three Paladins of Ukko, Tom Clovely begins his journey into the far north, a squire in the service of some of the greatest warriors of the world, who wield living swords descended from the first and greatest of the named blades; as the Paladins embark in a quest to find The Hatchling Man, a man born of an egg, and man upon whom rests the fate of peace, and a quest that that will see the Knights of Ukko pitched into a conflict where they are no better than pawns.
