"I'm afraid I don't quite understand why you love the ocean." She said, her voice all silver bells and flute melodies.

He stuck his hands into his pants pockets, for having nothing better to do, and huffed. Saying nothing, he just observed as the princess skillfully transported an unfurling rose into a cozy spot next to a cherry tree. A smudge of dirt resided on her smooth cheek, and he resisted the urge to come over and wipe it off.

Instead, he sighed and looked out to the coast, where the sea kissed the horizon, way, way down below, just at the edge of his sight's limit. His trained sailor eyes realized that the sea was peaceful today, with gentle waves barely breaking through the tranquil blue surface. An invisible string tugged at him to go, to cut through smooth sea surface and go beyond the horizon; beyond the sky. To see with his own eyes what stories were hidden there. 

Sea-longing.

However, something grounded his thoughts, back to the blossoming garden here, in the palace. The princess had just completed her work and promptly smiled, admiring the roses. Her face glowed brighter than the full moon glimmer on the waves when she smiled. 

His heart skipped a beat. His breathing hitched. 

Perhaps this craving of her was stronger than his sea-longing. And that thought alone should terrify him.All Rights Reserved
