McKenzie started her journey extremely late. Nine years late to be exact because of her father's death three months before she turned ten. She stuck around and took after her mother. After nine years, with a heavy worried heart, her mother allows her to go. She quickly wipes the floor with the gym leaders, Hoenn League, and Elite Four. Remembering her first month starting as a trainer, a year later, she reunites with Steven Stone, the Champion of the Hoenn League. It was a close fight, but Steven beats her. Because of her fascination with stones as well, the two get close and share their fascination.
