Welcome to the Fae-ruled Kingdom of Nakrid, overseen by the dark mistress Amora.
Poverty is common here, leaving the streets overrun with thievery and murder, though nobody actually does anything to stop it. This is a Kingdom full of cruel immortal creatures that would turn on one another at the drop of a hat. Public executions are as commonly used as entertainment as operas or plays in other countries; there are arena matches, pit fights in nearly every tavern, and children are trained from a young age to make friends for the purpose of using them later on. Some kids are even recruited as assassins or thieves. This is a society where males and females are pitted against eachother from birth, and nobody is to be trusted.
There is, however, a catch; all magic is banned, with the only exceptions being the nine members of Amora's Court, and Amora herself. Every citizen, upon reaching the age of five, is given a set of jewelry consisting of two rings and two bracelets. These are made of an odd, sickly blue stone infused with iron that both saps and represses magic, and there is no known way to remove this jewelry.
Nakrid primarily consist of Fae and other immortals such as vampires and werewolves, however, there are many humans that are used as slaves or even food. They're sold at auctions, pitted against some another in arena fights, and sometimes even forced to be sex slaves.
Now, there are rumors spreading throughout the Kingdom, whispers of rebellion bouncing across market squares and taverns. It's nothing but a mismatch band of misfits, full of humans and some of the more soft-hearted Fae. Nobody worries, of course. The rebels will be put in their place, same as always.

You do magic once, and it sticks to you like glitter glue...
When Johnny and his best friend, Alison, pass their summer holidays dabbling in magic, they never expect it to have consequences. Sure, it'd be great if they could banish bullies or change their lives for the better, and what harm could come from lighting a few candles and chanting a few spells? They get their answer in the form of an earthquake unleashed at their behest, which draws the attention of the Marduk Institute, an age-old organization dedicated to fostering the talents of young wizards.
Whisked away to the institute and told they can never return to their old lives, Johnny and Alison must quickly adapt to a new world shimmering with monsters, fraternities, and cute boys like Hunter and Blake. But when they're pulled into a dark, supernatural fight that could cost them their lives, they'll have to find strength they never knew they had as they battle for love, acceptance, and their own happy endings -- all with the help of a little bit of magic.
