We don't know how long the Wolf's been here.

They say it came one day, in the dark of the night, creeping into our forest and claiming it as its own. They say that there was a time before it, when people would laugh and dance, when people could do as they pleased. They say that before the Wolf, things were blissful. Now, darkness sweeps the land. To wander into the woods is suicide. To harm one of her children is death. To hunt down the wolf is insanity.

We don't know where it originated from.

Some say Hell. Others say a beast so old that time forgot it. A few people say it's the guardian of the forest it dwells in. Many blame a witch's curse.

We don't know what it is.

Larger than a horse, it creeps about with ethereal grace and silence. It's howls echo with forlorn threats. It is every shadow, every bump in the night. It does not fear us. We fear it. The beast is brutal, each of its fangs dripping with crimson blood. Talons the size of kitchen knives jut from its broad paws. It protects the smaller of its kin. The nightmare is ugly and beautiful, elegant and awful. Long ago, it flushed out the last of us from the trees. Before, they say many people lived scattered about in the forests surrounding our meager village.

Now, there's only one. It belongs to an old woman.

The grandmother of my fiance, Rebecca Red.

Red braves the forest on occasion to visit her grandma, never missing a day nor running into harm. Her grandmother is too old and lacking the vigor to risk a journey to town, and Red is young and fit. She thought that simply because she has had no accidents before that none would ever happen. How many times I have warned her, even I do not know. But how I wish she had listened to me. Because now, the Wolf's got Red under siege. Now, the Wolf is baying for blood. Now, the Wolf has captured my Red.

We don't know how long the Wolf's been here.

All we know is that it isn't going to be here much longer.

OF KINGS AND PAWNS

84 parts Complete

Ray is low on time, luck, and hope; his only chance is an artifact that may not even exist. But upon meeting Landon, Ray is beginning to believe he might find all four. ***** Cambions are doomed to tragedy. They are weak, sickly creatures that rarely live to see their twentieth year. Ray refuses to resign himself to that fate. Upon learning of the Crimson Sheath-an artifact capable of preserving his life-Ray is prepared to fight, steal, and kill to get his hands on it. He is not prepared for Landon. Landon is an orphan with no memories of his parents, the only inheritance left to him a dagger, sleeping in a crimson sheath. Though he has no love of bloodshed and no use for a dagger, Landon isn't about to let Ray take his only link to his forgotten history, even if that means following the cambion past the edge of the world and into the shadow beyond.
