"I'm sorry," I whisper as I lay broken on the numbing, stone floor like a lost rag doll. The Shadows screech my name, their desperation burning their lungs; heaviness lays mercilessly on my muscles; my power whimpers as it doggedly powers through my hands and into the wall of light that separates me. Separates me from death. The darkness prowls behind the shimmering light, moving in mocking, languid swirls. It roars as it brushes past my weak wall, shattering it without any effort. I collapse to my knees, ignoring the jarring pain through my joints. I glance helplessly up at the descending darkness. A small noise of despair escapes through my bloody lips. In that moment, I can feel my rogue hairs that have escaped my tight braid clinging the nape of my neck; I can taste the metallic blood slicking over my teeth, the thick, warm texture and revolting taste making me cringe; I can see the darkness twirling around my arms, a deadly snake mocking its prey before the kill. Names and faces of beloved flash before my eyes. Fletcher. Seraph. Othello. Zach. Taylor. I smile. In my last moments I smile as the darkness rips my soul. Piece. By. Piece.

Book 2 in Stray Series. I know I'm not worthy of a second chance. I've taken away so many others' second chances. I took their lives in my hands and each time chose mine over theirs. It didn't matter who they were, if they had family, how old they were. I had a job to do. If I heard even a whisper, it was over. I had to. I didn't want to, but I had to. It didn't even matter in the end. She's gone now. I'm all alone. Somehow, for some reason, a second chance was bestowed on me. But I don't want it. I can't have it. And he knows it too. -This story has depictions of violence, SA, depression, panic attacks, gore.
