"The knot in my chest tightened as I further realized my situation. I was sitting in a spinny chair, in my room, across from a murderer. Someone who's wanted by the police. The bad guy. The villain.

And he just crashed through my window."

✦

In Charity Preston's lit up, home town in New York, the most violent crime committed had been the occasional mugging or car accident. And, if you're really unlucky, a murder every few months.

At least, it had been until the Supers started showing up and reeking havoc on the busy streets, much to NYPD's dismay. Unsurprisingly, all those with abilities were forced to make a decision: stay in the shadows, become a hero, or become a villain.

When the city's best hero goes MIA and a brand new, all powerful super villain shows up in his place, it becomes pretty clear to everyone that 'missing in action' might just turn out to really be 'killed in action'.

One shattered window, an infuriatingly rude Super who can't seem to leave her alone, and a few stunning discoveries later, and Charity just couldn't help but let the questions bubble to the surface.

Who would you choose to be? The Hero, or the Villain?

Emerson Rogers liked to think of himself as an ordinary teenager. After all, he had no reason to believe otherwise. He went to an upstanding private school with the rest of his friends, was a straight-A student, had no disciplinary issues, and was well-liked according to his classmates and teachers. If anyone were to take a glance at him, they would assume that he was just another carefree rich kid with no problems in his life to worry about. Unless you consider the fact that his evening plans included putting on a blue super suit and speeding through the streets as a crime-fighting superhero. Okay, so maybe his life wasn't as ordinary and carefree as he liked to portray it. With Emerson starting his senior year of high school, things have started to become a bit more tricky than he would've preferred. Defending Jefferson City and maintaining a normal school life as a cover can be hard, but throw in his best friend getting closer to the truth about his alter-ego's identity and a mysterious villain working from the shadows who always seems to be two steps ahead, living a double life is going to be his biggest challenge yet. Especially when new villains start crawling out of the woodwork, thirsty for a fight, and his old villains return stronger, angrier, and looking to settle a score. As Emerson starts to uncover the truth behind where all these villains are coming from, he finds that not everything is what it seems on the surface. And that he and this mysterious villain have a stronger connection than he originally thought.

She does what she can to survive, inadvertently making her a target for the heroes. Behind her mask, she struggles in personal battles, alone. Times change and things shift for the worse as Neera's ex, Koen James, comes back into her life stronger as a supervillain, threatening the peace of the world and the freedom Neera discovered. ⚡️⚡️⚡️ Neera's eyes closed and her chest rose as she breathed deeply, trying her hardest to focus her power on the heroes nearing her. She opened her eyes, watching intently as the heroes slowly crowded on the rooftop around her. The moon illuminated their serious masked faces and flashy suits, giving Neera the opportunity to figure out what powers they might possess. She kept her eyes halfway closed and studied them. Most of the suits were at least 75% black. One hero stuck out in her blue suit. It had no black on it. Neera was wary of the color of her suit. /How did I end up here?/ One of the heroes had surprised her with a lucky hit almost a minute ago. She had felt the impact and acted on it, diving to the ground. She had a better fighting chance against the six when they were caught off guard. And if one of them had the ability to purify water, it would all go down hill. ⚡️⚡️⚡️ Romance; mental-health awareness; superheroes; abuse

Shortlisted for the Open Novella Contest 2019 • Being a Supervillain is tough. Between managing a secret lair and making sure your mom doesn't stop loving you because you keep telling everyone she's dead, it's a really hard business to be good at? Add to that, the fact that somehow you got arrested because your cat sitter didn't take the day off and then you go around expressing your unconditional love for pancakes in a Super holding cell because technically they can't put you in a proper prison and you don't really have a choice because lawyers are expensive? And then, you realise your best friend is plotting go take over your spot as the greatest villain there ever was? Okay, maybe not the greatest, but you do come pretty close to it! To top it off, there's that one Superhero who's just so completely gorgeous, you couldn't imagine any harm coming to them? Because they're just that precious? I guess that makes me a Supervillain with minor time travel superpowers and a huge crush on a not so powerful Superhero? And all you have to do is protect yourself and everyone you love from your ex best friend/sidekick --because let's face it that's the highest level of praise for a wretched traitor here--and you also have to get out of Super Holding somehow? What could go wrong? Right?
