Dan was born with powers similar to a voodoo doll's, which made his life a living hell. All his life, thanks to these powers, he had received nothing but hate from those around him, even his own parents had given up on him.
This man, Richard was his name, took Dan under his wing, cared for him while he was young, 'loved' him like his own son. Why 'loved'? Because he didn't love him at all. Richard only wanted to use Dan's abilities for his own good. You see, Rich was a very hated man and had a lot of enemies, so having Dan around was amazing, one flick of his wrist and the person he hated most could be dead. Killed by Dan's hands.
Dan had given up on emotions, ditched them like his family did with him. That was all until the happy go lucky Phil came along and completely turned his world upside down.
