A sendup to classic stories like Journey to the West and Bram Stoker's Dracula,  The Demon of the Marshlands details the life of Shavala Nines, a maligned and malformed thief on the path to attaining true infamy. On one of her heists, she gets captured by the Lord of the East, the monarch in control of every city and army in the region. In exchange for her life, he sends her on a pilgrimage to bring a mysterious letter to the Lord of the West.

20 days : the amount of time it takes to travel from the safety of the capitol to the outskirts of civilization at the craters of a calamity and back. 20 days are much too long for August's taste being tasked to retrieve and escort a dangerous convicted prisoner from an outpost in the wild fallback full of monsters and creatures of the night. If it was not for the pay, he would not set one foot into the dark outback that was once a primeval desolation. Accompanied by the Deputy of the city the convict ruined, he finds himself on an unwanted adventure to take a murderer to her destination. And the world around them cries evil in canon. And perhaps some things are not as black and white as August first thought. This is my ONC entry for this year (and a novella for a book that will be published soon <3).
