What if on your 15th birthday you received a letter that tells you you're a vampire, and you have to leave your family. Would you believe it? Would you listen? Would you be happy?
On Ariella's 15th birthday she receives a letter telling her she is a prospect, a normal human who at the age of 15 will turn into a vampire. Prospects are sent to the vampire palace until the winter solstice: the longest night of the year, where vampires are their strongest. The solstice is the day "the choosing" happens, all prospects turning 15 that year are sorted.
