Becky is just thirteen and already she is an orphan, recently losing her father in an industrial accident. For an orphan in Victorian Ontario life was bad enough, but with her father's death some money has gone missing and Becky has to run.

Becky has an ally however. Mary is nineteen, Mohawk and puts up with no nonsense. She has been with Becky's family for four years as a servant and as a final act of service helps Becky escape. She decides the best place for Becky is her birthplace, with her extended family, in England. But Mary has a big secret that Becky cannot accept and it tests their friendship to the limit.
Along on the adventure is a fiesty little terrier named Kip.
