Fifteen year old Naomi Lennon has not had the best two years. First, a fire destroys her house and kills her parents, which means she and her three year old sister Rebecca have to live with their busy, neglecting Aunt Nancy all the way in Michigan. Then, two years later, another fire strikes, and Naomi ends up jumping off the roof of a burning, three-story house, while holding and trying to protect Rebecca. As if that weren't enough, she gets threatened in a hospital elevator with a knife by her neighbor, who she was just acquainted with. Also, the same neighbor indicates that the fires were the work of an arsonist, who is apparently trying to kill both her and Rebecca, for a reason unknown to her.
But at least she got some cookies out of the deal.
