When Wynter Ash, an Immortal finds out her boyfriend has been using her to cheat on his wife, she breaks up with him. Quentin Lyle, her ex-boyfriend, is angry at this for no one breaks up with him, HE breaks up with THEM. He wasn't going to let her get away with that, so he went to the court, claimed she had done wrong by him and his family and sentenced her to the ceremony of Outcasts.
No matter how much Wynter protested the Judge didn't care. They don't look at the facts in her community. Whoever was of higher social rank was usually deemed innocent.
The next day Wynter was dragged to a chamber in which they put her through the torturous ceremony of someone forcefully entering her mind and body, ripping out a part of who she was by stripping her of her immortality. 
She was then forced to suffer without food, water or care for 3 days in a cell before the Elder Immortals chanted a few words and a burning pain appeared on the back of her neck. She knew there would be a tattoo there claiming her as an Outcast.
She was then assigned to work as a slave for the rest of her mortal life at Quentin's house as punishment for her actions. They thought her too weak to escape so they didn't bother restraints as they seated her in the back of the van. Elvira died right before the war ended, she was somehow brought back to life and encapsulated. Her body was restored with mechanical parts and a battery keeps her alive. After the crew set her free, she decides to join them and find out the real purposes of the war. Daniel entered a coma after the war and could never wake up. After a turn of events he got reanimated but he's got amnesia and cannot go under too much stress or else his body will fail. He wants to find out what happened to his wife and why they had a terrible fate 25 years ago.

If you feed from a human not only were you risking be found out, but you would either turn them in to a vamp or kill them. Either way was messy. Some turned into the truly undead were they exposed themselves just to get the high that they got from drinking from a warm vain. That was the least of her problems. She was pregnant with Stoneage kids and married to a man who could not look at her. All because he was ashamed of what he did or was it something else altogether?
