When Merlin disappeared, it took a chunk out of everyone's heart, especially Arthur's. The knights and him checked all of the five kingdoms, but he was nowhere to be found. Everyone just gave up and believed that he died. Because of this, Arthur was a mess and shut himself in his room. If you want to find out the rest read this story.
