Recently I read Margaret Atwood's book The Handmaid's Tale and then I discovered this site and a writing contest for a short story inspired by it. I was stoked! I love the set-up so much I'm thinking of making it a prologue to a sci-fi novella. The woman prisoner will be a little delusional and ready to believe she's entering another dimension when she's transferred. In the prologue here you've got to wonder if the cat really exists...

Kathleen had been imprisoned for years. She had no idea who they were or why she was there. Every day for years it had been the same thing. No talking or communicating with her captors after the first year she no longer tried. Getting beaten for making any noise at all. They didn't even speak within hearing distance of her. She was given a book and daily exercise but hadn't seen the sun or outside since she was put in her cell. Until that day when it all changed. Aliens existed and she was going somewhere with them, not sure as to where but at least she was out of her cell. She would not go back in one no matter how nice her new 'cage' seemed. Thinking of continuing this as another story with other humans and aliens. Like after Kathleen's abduction.
