"Calm down, just calm down." He thought to himself as he tried to even out his labored breathing, it it seems to just have made it worse. His breathing became shorter and harder causing him to clutch his chest as the bitter December air seemed to attack his throat. "Jairo." A soft voice rang out, though his head was still pounding. It caught his attention, "Jairo, you have to calm down, take deep breathes. I promise you're okay." He didn't feel okay though, it wasn't working. "I'm trying." He gasped clenching his eyes shut, he balled up his fist hitting his chest before falling to the ground. Suddenly he stopped, everything stopped. Jairo Agbayani or JAY is a 24 year old man living his everyday life in Chicago, Illinois. He's not satisfied but he's not complaining, however he feels that he should be doing more. In a world of drugs and guns that men dominate, Kaya Okoro is feared amongst them all for the standing her father's mafia holds and the reputation she has built by carrying out deeds that no other can do without leaving a trace. However, with her father's sudden passing she and her family are now left extremely susceptible to the dangers of the male dominated world that would rather burn than to see a woman, her mother, lead the mafia. Unwilling to back down, Kaya's family do their best to put on a brave face by attending the annual gala of peace between all mafias, where she is reunited with Dakari Adisa, a childhood friend.. Dakari Adisa is a well respected and connected man who built his empire with his own two hands, drugs being its strong foundation. He isn't close to his family due to issues with his parents, so in his world are only a small circle of friends who replace them. When all hell breaks loose at the gala of peace and Kaya is at the center of it. Unable to set herself free, Dakari gives her a hand per her mother's request, but this hand comes with the proposal of marriage, something Kaya didn't think she would involve herself in, though with her life on the line she has no choice but to accept. And unsurprisingly being married to Dakari not only saves her life but reawakens feelings she can't understand and doesn't want to because ironically in a world as deadly as this one she fears nothing but emotions.

"Mama, I can't just leave Abir." I admitted, telling her exactly why I couldn't do this. Not only would she be snatching me away from my family and friends but she was taking me away from the person I'd loved for five going on six years. I couldn't just walk away from him. "Baby.." She trailed off, sighing deeply. "I know you love Abir." She stood to her feet to stop packing for a moment and pulled me into her. "But I promise you, there will be other boys. Right now you have to do what's best for you and that's coming with your daddy and I to give you a better life." "Better life for who? You?!" I screamed out, becoming even more angry at her choice of words. As if my feelings were robotic and I could just turn them on and off for any and every person. "My feelings just don't matter to y'all at all, huh?" I asked, crying harder than before now. "Speak to your mother with some respect, Giselle." My father spat to me and I shook my head, watching as they stood there looking at me like some dumb teenager. This wasn't puppy love for me. I didn't spend 5 years building something, just to walk away from it for their dreams. I couldn't do it. Sinner. Book #1
