Millions and millions of years later, everything is different than it is now. Everything is run by magic. Magic turns the lights on, Magic dresses you in the morning, Magic cooks your food. Everything. 

Every five years, something occurs called the Cleanse. The six High Rulers are each assigned 100 people who are chooses that are considered worthless to the world. Magic pulls them to the people they are assigned, and they kill them one by one. This is supposed to keep the population even. 

When Evelyn Storm is chosen, she does everything she can to stay hidden. To not be hunted down. The magic still leads one of the six high rulers to her but when he finds her, things take a surprising turn. 

The high ruler is strangely drawn to her in two ways. He wants to keep her safe forever under his protection, but the magic is telling him to kill her then and there. Will he obey the magic or listen his heart?
