Handmaid's are selected based on three things: beauty, genes, and fertility. Each woman is raised thinking that they are on this earth to reproduce and populate the colony. Girls are sold off as young as twelve to be slaves to their master. One handmaid becomes the wife and the others are there to mass-produce heirs. 

One colony began an uprising among the women started by: Josephine. Together Lucy and Jo form the rebellion that Marshall Whittmore wants to stop. He wants to end it before it is too late. The ladies of the colony have a plan and know it will work - but some of them are unsure.
