“I feel like I’m drowning and I can see everyone around me breathing,” I said, looking away from his steady gaze.

“Then let me save you,” His voice had an edge to it.

I looked up at Luke and met his blue eyes with mine, “I don’t know if you can.”

 

“Damn it Emery! You’re not letting yourself be saved. Right when people get close to you, you force them away, but I’m not going to give up that easily. I’m not going to let you drown.”


Emery Brooks is moving back to Seaside, California after living in Maryland for five years. The whole town knows why Emery's family left California, except Luke Hemmings, who moved there after the accident. But no one knows what happened to Emery in Maryland. And no one knows that Emery can't escape the feeling that she's drowning.
