"How close is he right now? Do I dare look behind me?" Your thoughts dared to wonder. In order to keep your legs moving you tune out the static, the fear, and the moment to focus on your heartbeat. You are sprinting too fast to feel the ground beneath you, you are not convinced it is fast enough still.
"Do you think you can run from me?" His voice violently blaring in your head. If sound could have a weight to it, his voice would be the entirety of the world threatening to crush your still beating heart into a thin, red paste. This sudden change from certainty, that you could run, was immolated the moment he proved your efforts were in vain. Truly, you could run. He couldn't drag you into the fabric of the unknown if you could reach civilization.
Yet this logic did little to ward off the echoes of his voice, you felt it's presence still poisoning your mind with doubt. You wanted to give up- oh it could end so swiftly. No one would see you taken to the depths that surpass human understanding; not for miles in this bleak, demoralizing night. There were things darker than this night, things that were close...and right behind you.
