When the Night Circus comes one day Astor, Tomas, and Hannah have no idea what to expect. They have never gone, even though it arrives each year, only for a few days then it is off again. It opens its gates only when the night rises, the last rays of the sun the key to its opening. The place is....wondrous. There are no words to describe the place. Their stay there is all too short. Then circus is quiet for day, abandoned, and is slowly becoming covered in dust. The town has become silent with it near. People slowly begin to disappear. Tomas has lost his mentor, Hannah's family disappeared. Everyone was leaving, as if the black and white tents radiate evil. The tents are taken away after months, loaded onto a train to be shipped to the sea. But what about the people? Where has everyone gone to? It seems that the answers lay with the circus and the trio must follow its remains to the sea.
