Alistair Bethel is a young teen living in a futuristic world. On Xephos V, technology is the lifeblood of civilization; the elite and middle class live in massive satellites orbiting the sprawling slums of the planet below, ravaged by nuclear waste and populated by extraterrestrials who are seen as inferior. Alistair is an outsider; his mother, unable to take care of him, entrusted him to Xephos V's Children's Home. Every Solar Trimester, the residents of the home have a chance to meet their birth mothers on Memory Day; Alistair's mother has never appeared. But, when he suddenly begins to experience dreams of his mother's face, and is framed for a horrific crime, he must take on a journey into the heart of Xephos V and beyond to discover his past and save himself; otherwise, the safety of the entire planet may be compromised.

Set after a war which had nearly wiped out all of civilization, this story follows a Nightwatcher, Cato-one of the few people put in place to protect the little bits of salvageable land. They guard their lands atop high medieval walls, never looking inward-never knowing what exactly they are protecting. When an army breaks through the front gate, Cato's life is completely changed. He awakes within the walls, in a place he has never seen. A girl named Adalyn finds him and takes him on an adventure that explores the ins and outs of the world, centered around the city he had protected all of his life: Prevnaar Tribeck. Cato will learn who his parents are, what the city he has protecting is actually like, and what its like to live a normal life in the world after the war-a world that is almost entirely broken to pieces. He will quickly learn one thing above all else: there is no shortage of death in this new world.
