Izaya es japones, sin embargo aprende idimos con mucha rapidez. Sabe hablar Inglés, pero no mucho Español. Cuando los dos se conocen, Shizuo tiene serios problemas para comunicarse, de alguna manera Izaya se las ingenia para para hacerle entender lo que quiere decir: "I'll teach you English".
