Dan was give a notebook to write his feelings when he was sad or needed to get his emotions out. He thought it was a stupid idea until he finally figured out what to do with it. He uses it to write letters to the only person he's loved with all of his heart about all the memories they've shared together. All their first times together reminiscing on the important milestones in their relationship. Making it feel like that boy was right next to him as he did.
