It’s been 137 years since that day. The day my two month old twin sister Jessamine went missing. We looked for days, but as time passed we realized she was gone, never to be seen again. Nobody knows exactly what happened to her, where she went, who took her there, or why, all I know is I have a twin sister that I don’t even remember. There are people who could have helped us find her, problem is nobody knew about us. We were my mom’s dirty little secret and even after all these years, we still are.
My mom had her reasons for keeping us a secret. For one thing she was only 15 when she had us. That’s bad enough nowadays, but imagine it being the late 1800’s where if people knew she’d be cast away, judged, mistreated, and given the scarlet letter. My mom doesn’t even remember anything happening that could have led to my sister and I being born. We were a drunken mistake, and the other guy she shared the mistake with, we don’t know who he is. We do know one thing about him though; he’s a demon. How we know this? I’m a warlock, my mom is a witch and in order for her to have a warlock, the dad has to be a demon. Reason number three I’m a secret.
Thing about warlocks? They’re immortal which means that I’ve had every day for 137 years to wonder about all the missing pieces in my life about my dad and sister, but in order to find out the truth I would need to be back in the year it all started. That’s why I’m glad we have the Year of the Immortal.
The Year of the Immortal happens once every 40 years, it’s for immortals over the age of 100. It allows them to go back in time and visit the people they lost over the years. It’s my first time, and while I will be visiting people I miss from my lifetime, that’s not my only purpose for my year of being back in the day.
My name is Anna Herrin, and this year all the mysteries are going to end because for my Year of the Immortal I’m going to figure out the mystery that is my life.
